A spokeswoman for Seehofers said the goal must be 100 percent coverage

It’s a first step.

What else do you need?

Here too we have to think carefully. On the one hand, we must not agree with those who see a room on the Internet in which the rules from the analog world no longer apply. A platform is not just a space where people can communicate with each other. There are also ethical questions. The operators of the platforms have a great responsibility. They have to take over that too. On the other hand, it must not lead to freedom of expression being restricted. We have to think about it further and weigh it up. That is why we are currently evaluating the Network Enforcement Act.

How much time do you spend on the internet every day?

If reading a digital newspaper is one of them: one hour. Or one and a half. Sometimes maybe two. When I drive for two hours, I read a lot on the Internet – and of course I get annoyed when there are dead spots. Possibly I will use the Funkloch app one day …

Steam users can stream their games to their smartphone or tablet. Previously this was only possible with Android devices – but that has now changed.

Users of the game platform Steam can now also stream their games on iPhones and iPads. The prerequisite for this is, on the one hand, the installation of the Steam Link app on the respective Apple mobile device and a computer (Windows, Mac or Linux) with the Steam program started.

On the other hand, the smartphone or tablet and the computer must be in the same WLAN network. Then only Steam controllers or Apple-certified gamepads with the MFi logo are missing to control the game. Because the mobile device only functions as a screen. Up until now, Steam games could only be streamed to Android devices. Click here to go to the app in the Google Play Store.

In the competition for the 5G mobile radio frequencies, the participants seem to be slowly running out of air – and yet there is no end in sight. According to one expert, that’s a bad sign. Because the bids are already ridiculously high.

The never-ending auction of 5G mobile radio frequencies in Germany will have a loser from the perspective of a scientist. After analyzing the 270 rounds to date, it is clear that only one of 41 blocks will be disputed, said auction theorist Vitali Gretschko of the German Press Agency in Mannheim. So you are actually almost there – but none of the four auction participants want to do without this one block.

"Whoever withdraws now is the big loser." The auction is only over when a company’s auction budget has been exhausted, says the economics professor. When could that be? That is difficult to say, also because the companies’ auction budgets are top secret.

"It can be tonight, but it can also be in a few months", said Gretschko, who heads the market design research group at the Mannheim think tank ZEW. ZEW stands for "Centre for European Economic Research". The Federal Network Agency in Mainz has been auctioning 41 mobile phone blocks since mid-March, the highest bids currently totaling 5.61 billion euros – the expected 3 to 5 billion euros have already been exceeded by far.

None of the bidders want to give up now

It’s about 12 blocks on the 2 gigahertz band – there has been no movement at the auction on these blocks with a longer range for a long time, so de facto agreement. In contrast, the 3.6 gigahertz band, on which 29 blocks are offered, is competitive. According to Gretschko’s reading of the course of the auction, Telekom wants nine blocks, Vodafone eight, Telefónica (O2) seven and Drillisch six.community service examples In total, the plans of the companies add up to 30 blocks – one too many.

The auction participants are currently in a phase that in game theory as "Wall of Attrition" is referred to, in German "Attrition". "Everyone hopes in every round that someone else can no longer and gives up"says Grechko.

The dilemma: If an outbidger decides against a new highest bid in the next round and the auction is over, he will be punished twice: He gets fewer blocks than planned, but still has to shoulder high costs – because the other blocks are in have become very expensive due to the rising competition.

"If he had withdrawn four weeks ago, he would have had the same number of blocks as now, but they would have been half as expensive"explains the economics professor. None of the participants would like to get into this situation – and therefore continue to take part in the betting, although it is clear to him that the price has long been very high.

In 2015 there was a similar phase in the cell phone auction at the time, when Telefónica ended up reducing and getting one block less than desired. After 178 rounds, just under 5.1 billion euros came into the state treasury.

It is advisable to keep your own limited financial resources in mind at such auctions and to get out as early as possible, explains the game theorist – before that "Attrition" begins. This would avoid the risk of having to pay way too much money. "But the future of the company is at stake at the auctions, the pressure is high – it is very difficult to get out on time."

Berlin (dpa) – It is a decision with enormous consequences for citizens and companies: A fierce dispute has broken out between the government and network operators over the introduction of the new 5G mobile communications standard.

This should ensure much faster Internet than before. In a fire letter to Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier (CDU), managers from Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Telefónica threaten with lawsuits and warn of one "extensive expansion of coverage requirements" – So the obligation to have to cover all rural regions 100 percent with expensive 5G masts.

The managers accuse politicians of having expectations "which are economically in no way representable and legally untenable" be. By the end of the month, the Federal Network Agency wants to determine the conditions under which 5G frequencies will be auctioned in spring 2019.

The cellular network is really that bad

Possibly on Friday, perhaps not until next week, the authority will send the rules to the advisory board – if the conditions are there in black and white, significant changes will be difficult to make. So time is of the essence – for the network operators to keep the requirements low, and for the politicians to be able to announce a comprehensive mobile Internet to the citizens and thus to their voters.

The topic of 5G is also causing gossip within the Berlin government coalition. Chancellery chief Helge Braun (CDU) has been emphasizing for a long time that a nationwide 5G expansion is "incredibly expensive". However, Braun’s attitude does not suit several ministers, including from the Union, and the coalition partner SPD. SPD General Secretary Lars Klingbeil spoke of one on Thursday "political declaration of bankruptcy"if Braun is satisfied with 5G coverage in metropolitan areas.

The 5G issue also dealt with the federal cabinet on Thursday at a closed meeting on digitization in Potsdam. Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) admitted to the expansion of the mobile Internet in Germany, but said that it would "of course not now can include 5G for everyone."

Klingbeil, on the other hand, emphasized for the SPD leadership: "We need a tender that ensures that everyone in Germany has access to 5G, regardless of where they live". Merkel’s head of the Chancellery Braun also faced headwinds from Union colleagues: Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner (CDU) and Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) also called for 5G for everyone.

A spokeswoman for Seehofers said the goal must be 100 percent coverage. Supplying high-speed internet only for 98 percent of households, as previously provided for by the Federal Network Agency’s 5G auction, means that around 15 to 20 percent of the area would not be supplied with it. "And these are naturally rural regions."

Klöckner said "Rheinische Post": "There are too many blank spots on the map." Goal is one "real-time coverage of 99 percent of all households"that the remaining gap should then be closed through funding programs.

Behind the scenes, it is said from the mobile communications industry that the expectation of full coverage is a completely unrealistic request. If specifications for a nationwide 5G expansion were implemented, there would also be one "Savings" the landscape. Because the powerful 5G masts have a shorter range than 4G systems, significantly more would have to be built than with the current 4G network. In addition: Private customers hardly need 5G anyway, for most mobile surfers 4G is completely sufficient, according to the industry.

In contrast, industry is calling for a comprehensive 5G network. The technology is needed for autonomous driving, for example. In addition, medium-sized companies in rural areas fear that they will be economically behind without comprehensive coverage, if they only have a second-class network or even continue to have dead spots.

The current plan provides that by the end of 2022 5G technology, which is also supposed to eliminate dead spots when trains are traveling, should be available along the motorways and on 5300 kilometers of federal highways, but not on country roads. The coalition agreement stipulates that from 2025 there will be a nationwide legal right to fast internet. Billions are also made available for the expansion of fiber optic cables, but sometimes there is less lack of money than of capacities at the construction companies that specialize in this area.

The cabinet had to set up a special fund in August "Digital infrastructure" with an initial volume of initially 2.4 billion euros. In addition to broadband expansion, this is intended to achieve the digitization of thousands of schools in particular – the pot is also to be fed from the income from the 5G license auction.

The mobile phone giants are now on the barricades: The 5G award is looming "to become an industrial disaster"It says in the letter that the dpa has received. The letter was signed by the German bosses of Deutsche Telekom, Dirk Wössner, from Vodafone, Hannes Ametsreiter, and from Telefónica, Markus Haas. That too "National roaming" is a thorn in their side. To do this, they would have to open their network to competitors who do not have their own antennas. Should the conditions be decided as feared by the network operators, the award conditions would be "clearly illegal".

From their point of view, the value of the auction would be disproportionate to the immense costs that would be caused by the conditions. "Legal disputes would presumably lead to the reversal of the entire procurement process and thus to a massive delay in the introduction of 5G"the letter says.

Amazing: The companies that want to finally bring Germany into the digital fast lane are now threatening to hit the brakes. Other countries are a long way ahead. The 5G standard should be available everywhere at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and cars without drivers should transport guests.

Missed the deadline, forgot important data in the termination or did not receive a confirmation? There are many reasons why you stay in contracts longer than you wanted. But if you, as a customer, pay attention to a few tricks, you will quickly see that canceling properly is not rocket science.

You had just thought about it, but then the notice period has already passed. The result: one year longer with expensive cell phone or landline tariffs. The following applies to fixed-term contracts: "As a rule, the notice period for mobile or landline contracts is three months to the end of the contract", explains Thomas Grund from Stiftung Warentest.

Customers should not forget to also cancel other contracts or subscriptions that they may have concluded at the same time via the mobile network provider, such as subscriptions for music streaming services or audio books. Thomas reason: "In any case, such contracts must be canceled separately, otherwise the contracts will continue even though the mobile phone contract has already been canceled."
